Flood Plain Management — The NZ Experience

  • Chapter
Flood Hydrology

Abstract

The New Zealand experience with flood plain management is described in terms of the nature of the flood problem, the features of New Zealand’s flood plain management system which are unique, because of the direct links between government technical and planning agencies and the strong ties between central and local government.

The future directions are set out as a unified flood-loss reduction programme based on New Zealand conditions and needs and what has been learnt from the experience of other nations.
