Massive Stars in Nearby Galaxies

Abstract

IUE spectra and optical data (MMT blue spectra and CCD photometry) have been obtained for OB supergiants in M31 and M33. UV and visible data yield consistent values for the effective temperature, bolometric magnitudes, and extinction for the stars, which we classify as late 0 to early B. The UV resonance lines have very low outflow velocities compared to galactic stars, and no P Cygni profiles, suggesting that there may be significant differences in mass loss mechanisms among Local Group galaxies, as a consequence of different metal1icities. The UV interstellar extinction in both galaxies appears like the LMC and not like the Galaxy.
