Mass and Energy Balance in the Interstellar Medium: How to Model the Disk Gas in our Galaxy

Part of the book series: Astrophysics and Space Science Library ((ASSL,volume 134))

Abstract

A model for the interstellar medium is given which addresses the energy balance between cold, warm, and hot components, and which is consistent with recent observational data on pressures, cloud cooling, and OVI measurements. It is further demonstrated that the proposed model is stable under a wide range of parameter space and converges to a solution approximating conditions which are observed for our Galaxy. Finally, the consequences of extreme conditions on model solutions are considered, and the implications for the interstellar medium in other galaxies are discussed.
