Hercules — A New Instrument for TeV Astronomy

  • Chapter
Very High Energy Gamma Ray Astronomy

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIC,volume 199))

Abstract

An improved photon detector, operating in the range of 1011 to 1014 eV, is described. The Whipple Observatory’s atmospheric Cherenkov detector will be upgraded with the addition of another “10 m” class reflector and two high resolution Cherenkov cameras (pixel spacing 0.25°). The new apparatus, symbolized by the acronym HERCULES (High Energy Radiation Cameras Using Light Emitting Showers), will improve the sensitivity of the present detector by more than a factor of ten.
