Pulsation and Mass Loss for AGB Stars

Late Stages of Stellar Evolution

Part of the book series: Astrophysics and Space Science Library ((ASSL,volume 132))

Abstract

Mechanisms of mass loss are reviewed, with some general comments. The effects of pulsation on the structure of the atmosphere and on the efficiency with which mass loss occurs are described, and arguments presented that most mass loss which affects stellar evolution occurs during epochs of large-amplitude pulsation. Some specific consequences of the combination of pulsation and radiation pressure on dust in Miras and OH-IR stars are reviewed. Finally, the effects of mass loss on the main sequence and post-main sequence evolution of stars from .8 – 12 solar masses is discussed, both for the current “standard picture” and for the alternative case where mass loss occurs preferentially when stars are pulsating.
