Abstract
Detailed abundance analyses of CNO, Fe-peak and heavy, s-pprocess elements have been carried out for 22 red giants spanning the spectral range K5 to M6 and including types MS and S. The M giants exhibit the signature of the first dredge-up on the red giant branch, in agreement with what has been observed in the G and K giants, while the MS and S stars show increasing C/O ratios relative to the M stars. In addition, the MS and S stars reveal a progressive enhancement of the s-process elements with increasing 12C-abundance resulting from the third dredge-up during the thermally pulsing asymptotic giant branch phase of stellar evolution.
