Abstract

A positive conclusion from the discussion at the workshop was that the ion dipole capture rates from the parameterized classical trajectory calculations are generally the best choice for comparison to experimental rate constants. Quantum effects may be important at temperatures below ca. 100K, however. Questions were raised about the role in determining collision rates of terms in ion-molecule potentials other than the ion dipole and ion induced dipole terms. The applicability of the various capture theories at translational energies above ca. 0.1 eV was questioned. A number of these conclusions and questions are concisely summarized in Henchman’s contribution below. Viggiano, Paulson and Dale report below intriguing evidence of low temperature rate constants larger than expected from classical collision theory.
