Abstract
Proton transfer reactions are, obviously, among the most important in all of chemistry, and they play a key role in the chemistry of gas phase anions. Their primary importance is in their use in the formation of anions when a strong base, e.g. HO−, reacts with an acid. Endothermic proton transfers are also extremely important in gas phase anion chemistry, especially that of carbanions, for these can lead to hydrogen-deuterium exchange reactions and these reactions can, in turn, give vital information about ion structure and reaction mechanism. Simple and complex H/D exchange is discussed in terms of mechanism and energetics, and examples are given of its use in deducing ion structure.
