Formation of Anions in the Gas Phase

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIC,volume 193))

Abstract

Only a few anions can be produced efficiently and exclusively in the gas phase by electron impact, so indirect methods, usually involving gas phase ion-molecule chemistry must be employed. In this paper we summarize some of the methods which have been used in the flowing afterglow (FA) and ion cyclotron resonance (ICR) spectrometer for producing anions, particularly carbanions, for subsequent investigation of their chemical reactions.
