Abstract
The social sciences have presented three insights which are partly responsible for the moral crisis of our time:
-
first, that much of what we have done or are doing can be excused by referring to our poor background, education, situation and society;1
-
second, that our norms are relative to the situation in which they are used: “thou shall not kill” is in some situations interpreted as “thou shall kill”;2
-
third, that our norms are only the norms of our group or society, whereas other groups or societies do have other norms, i.e. our norms are neither better nor worse than other norms.3
