Abstract

This chapter deals with the IUE observations of interstellar matter in diffuse and dark clouds in the Milky Way and Magellanic Clouds. We will describe the data, its means of analysis, and the derived scientific knowledge about the structure, abundances, and physical state of the gas. We begin by discussing observations of diffuse and dark clouds in the Milky Way, in and near the disk. We then proceed to discuss depletion mechanisms and grain theories, and will review IUE observations of reflection nebulae, of gas in the Milky Way halo and of gas in the Magellanic Clouds.
