Abstract
The structure of the outer solar atmosphere will be discussed in the context of the processes of energy transfer that play a part in the solar corona. Special emphasis is laid on the competitive role played by the four main energy processes, dissipation, radiation, heat conduction, and hydrodynamic expansion.
A steadily heated quiet outer solar atmosphere may be divided into several rather distinct layers according to the dominance of one or more of the processes mentioned before.
The influence of solar activity and magnetic fields on the structure and energy balance of the corona is discussed, particularly the consequences for the heat flow and solar wind in coronal streamers.
