Abstract

A number of relatively new techniques utilizing in situ high voltage electron microscopy (HVEM),1,2 synchrotron radiation, 3 selected area electron channeling patterns (SACP’s),4,5 acoustic emission (AE) 6,7 and flaw reconstruction8–10 are being applied to improve the fundamental understanding of fracture processes. Only a few of these will be discussed in detail, specifically the AE and SACP techniques, and how these are contributing understanding to the details of sub-critical crack growth.
