The Thermal Properties of Fluoride Glass

  • Chapter
Halide Glasses for Infrared Fiberoptics

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((NSSE,volume 123))

Abstract

The thermal properties of fluoride glasses, including their characteristic transformation temperatures, thermal expansion, specific heat capacity and thermal conductivity, are reviewed in this paper. The significance of these parameters both in terms of the glass structure and their technological importance is discussed, with a particular emphasis on the data for ZrF4- and HfF4-based glasses. It has also been attempted to derive simple predictive relationships for the thermal properties, in order to fill existing gaps in the available data, either by extrapolation or by analogy to other glass systems. Finally, the possible magnitude and effect of thermally induced stress in fluoride glass optical waveguides has been considered.
