Halide Glasses for Infrared Fiberoptics

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((NSSE,volume 123))

Abstract

Vibrational spectroscopy is one of the most powerful techniques for the study of glass structure. This article presents infrared absorption and polarized Raman scattering spectroscopy results for a series of heavy metal halide glasses, including binary glasses based on HfF4, ThF4, ZnCl2 and ZnBr2.

The short range structures which best agree with the vibrational spectra are discussed, based on a model which includes two types of stretching force constants and one bending force constant. Tentative conclusions are derived concerning the main structural features which appear to favor glass formation in halide systems.
