Optical Properties of Fluoride Glasses

  • Chapter
Halide Glasses for Infrared Fiberoptics

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((NSSE,volume 123))

Abstract

The basic optical phenomena responsible for the transparency of heavy metal fluoride glasses are examined in terms of theory and experiment. The preparation and properties of the most widely used zirconium tetrafluoride-based compositions are emphasized, and their optical behavior contrasted with that observed in silicate glasses and other vitreous fluorides. The topics addressed include ultraviolet and infrared absorption, light scattering, refractive index, and the effects of ionizing radiation. The role of impurities such as metallic oxides, hydroxyl species, and carbon dioxide, and the merits and disadvantages of various reactive atmosphere treatments are discussed.
