Abstract

A series of bacteriocin-insensitive and phage-resistant mutants of Erwinia chrysanthemi 3937J, which is pathogenic on Saintpaulia ionantha, were analyzed with regard to their detectable changes in outer membrane (OM) structure. Two types of OM alterations were detected: alterations (i) in low iron inducible proteins and (ii) in the lipopolysaccharide. A pleiotropic effect was observed in the phenotypes of the mutants. For the mutants which were tested on saintpaulia plants, a correlation could be seen between the loss of pathogenicity and the alterations in low iron inducible proteins. The mutants did not exhibit altered extracellular pectinolytic and cellulolytic activities.
