Differential Structures and Activities of Three IFN α2 Variants Departing Only at Two Amino Acid Positions

Abstract

Almost 40 human interferon (IFN) a sequences have been derived from various c-DNA and chromosomal libraries (1). Cataloguing DNA segments containing IFN sequences, made it possible to distinguish 18 IFN α related loci in the chromosome (1,2,3). A genetic study based on 25 families, has restricted the number of different IFN α loci to about 17 (4) and has revealed a high degree of polymorphism in the human IFN a loci. For many of the known IFN α sequences it is not possible to decide whether they represent alleles or different loci, when they are compared to each other.
