Irrigation and Drainage for Improvement of Wet and Saline Soils: Reference to Portuguese Conditions

  • Chapter
Scientific Basis for Soil Protection in the European Community

Summary

This chapter reviews problems and ways of improvement of humid and saline soils, with emphasis on Portuguese conditions. The first part is orientedfor a global review of problems and presentation of effects of land reclamation methods for solving or minimizing them according to a Portuguese case study. The second part is orientedfor irrigation benefits and needs in Portugal. The analysis is done according to the main type of soil problems, including waterlogging, groundwater and saline situations
