The Use of X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy for the Analysis of Organic Coating Systems

  • Chapter
Surface Coatings—1

Abstract

In the evaluation of an organic coatings system the investigative scientist is concerned with the interrelationship between the three major constituents: the polymer resin (vehicle or binder), the inorganic constituents of the coating (pigments and extenders) and the substrate itself. Within the paint industry there exists a wide range of empirical techniques designed to rate the various properties of the coating, for example its durability, adhesive properties, wear resistance, light stability and so on. Although these tests have led to the development of a wide range of successful coatings, the scientific study of this area is still a relatively young, albeit rapidly expanding, discipline.
