Analysis of Coarsening and Densification Kinetics During the Heat Treatment of Nitrogen Ceramics

Abstract

In view of the recognised difficulties associated with the identification of atomic mechanisms during the microstructural development of ceramics, a technique has been developed which allows estimation of the relative rates of densification and coarsening (grain growth) in a sintering compact The results of applying the method to two silicon nitride powders are given and the possible benefits of the method discussed.
