Abstract
The focus of this book has been the threat posed to aquatic ecosystems by heavy metals. Consideration of standards is therefore limited to the maintenance of healthy biological systems in fresh and salt waters. Standards for other uses of water such as for public drinking water supply, for agricultural irrigation or for the production of food for human consumption whether by captive rearing or the harvesting of wild stock are not considered here, although these aspects have been well documented elsewhere.483–487
