Wholehearted and Halfhearted Care: National Policies vs. Individual Choice

  • Chapter
Ethical Dimensions of Geriatric Care

Part of the book series: Philosophy and Medicine ((PHME,volume 25))

Abstract

This whole symposium, as its title indicates, is taking place at a time in which our societal sense of what is appropriate medical care is being challenged by our economic concerns about how much health care our society can afford. For America, this is a new experience, one which makes all of us very uncomfortable. I hope in this paper to first raise the level of discomfort, and then to make certain suggestions that are the beginning of an attempt to try to lower that level.
