Abstract
Adenoviruses (AV) are medium-sized viruses (70–80 nm) containing linear DNA enclosed in a capsid with 252 capsomers. At least 40 serotypes of human AV have been identified and these can be divided into 7 subgroups (A-H). AV infect epithelial cells of mucous membrane, respiratory tract, and other organs. Most of the clinical manifestations caused by AV infections are not severe and heal spontaneously. However, in recent years it has been reported that severe and occasionally fatal AV infections may occur in immunocompromised patients, i.e. leukemic patients and recipients of kidney or bone marrow allografts (1–3). Also, epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC) is a frequently occurring and highly infectious disease.
