Abstract
The authors give five biological and epidemiological criteria for the diagnosis of Visceral Larva Migrans Syndrome (VLMS) as also the preliminary results of serodiagnostic tests using antigens of various nematodes, mainly Ascaris suum, Toxocara canis and Nippostrongylus brasiliensis.
Two hundred embryonated eggs of Toxocara canis were administered to “two mentally defective infants” by Smith and Beaver and they developed eosinophilia which persisted for more than 13 months (18). This experiment proved that T. canis larvae may be a cause of VLMS and fostered the idea that it was mostly if not only caused by T. canis (24–8).
A systematic study using numerous antigens of nematodes for serodiagnosis of VLMS allows us to give some supportive evidence in favour of the multiplicity of etiology of VLMS and of the partial role of T. canis.
