Abstract

When I accepted this assignment, I felt I could easily defend the position that inhalational anesthetic techniques were most optimal for patients with cardiac disease. I can no longer defend that position for patients with cardiac disease undergoing aortic reconstruction. Today I will present the data that led me to conclude that, prior to 1984, any anesthetic technique could be advocated for patients with cardiac disease, and that it was the anesthesiologist, not the technique, that made a difference in patient outcome. However, recent data imply that choice of agent also plays a role in patient outcome.
