Relationship of glucose intolerance and elevated triglyceride: implications for gemfibrozil

Abstract

Recent studies have suggested that the smaller triglyceride-rich lipoproteins may be atherogenic [1–3]. This, plus the observations that 70% of the population of triglyceride-rich lipoprotein particles in the plasma are those in the smaller (i.e. Sf 12–60, 250–350A) subpopulation [4], makes it particularly relevant to understand the factors regulating the metabolism of this family of lipoproteins. Our studies have focused on the role of insulin in the regulation of the metabolism of the triglyceride-rich lipoproteins. This is because of the close association of both insulin deficiency [5] and of hyperinsulinemia with hypertriglyceridemia [6–8].
