Abstract
The importance of compartmentat ion in plant metabolism (see Dennis and Miernyk, 1982) should have become clear in the previous chapters of this book . Some pathways use a number ofcompartments, and metabolites are shuttled from one to another during the operation of the pathway. Other pathways, which are entirely cytosolic in animal cells, may be compartmentalized in plants. Many of these pathways occur in the plastids of the plant cell, and the presence of these organelles is one factor that makes plant metabolism different from that of animals.
