Abstract

Using light and scanning electron microscopy the statospore of Mallomonas caudata was described from phytoplankton collected from 9 lakes situated in Southern Sweden. The cysts differed in size to the same degree irrespective of the lake. However, the ultrastructure of the cysts varied both within the population of a lake and between lakes. The implications of this variability for paleoecological studies are briefly discussed.
