Abstract

A review is presented covering several selected aspects of the physics of the solar corona, and including a personal viewpoint on a number of outstanding questions. Consideration of the three-dimensional heliosphere provides a link between the evolution of open field structures at the sun and the interplanetary solar wind. Attention is drawn to a number of problems that will be addressed by the proposed ESA mission, SOHO. Studies of the sun and its corona are of critical importance for the understanding of stellar winds, mass loss, activity and evolution.
