Experiments on Cosmic Dust Analogues

Part of the book series: Astrophysics and Space Science Library ((ASSL,volume 149))

Abstract

This report considers a variety of experiments that provide data on the formation, properties and processing of potential silicate components of cosmic dust. An earlier, similar report (Donn, 1985) included material covered at this meeting in sessions on ices and on carbon type matter. The attempt was to include all relevant processes for silicates not contained in the reviews of optical phenomena and grain irradiation. Many of the phenomena discussed here are applicable to all grain species. As consequence of the approach adopted here, this paper, is not a systematic and coherent treatment of a limited facet of experiments on grain analogs and does not generally treat the different technique in great depth. The references take care of this deficiency. In the silicate working group, particular aspects could be considered more critically and in greater detail.
