Abstract
This review discusses the physical and chemical processes by which molecules can be formed and destroyed under the conditions prevailing in cold interstellar clouds are reviewed. The general structure of chemical networks based on these processes is outlined and uncertainties in our current knowledge are pointed out. The chemistries in diffuse interstellar clouds, and in the outer and inner regions of dense clouds are discussed. Special attention is given to recent developments and to comparisons with millimetre and submillimetre observations.
