Abstract

The total length of the Lithuanian shoreline is about 100 km. This is the shortest coastal strip belonging to any country bordering the Baltic Sea. The Lithuanian coast stretches from the middle part of the Kursiu nerija spit (a coastal barrier) northward to the border of Latvia. On the Lithuanian coast are located Klaipeda (a large trade and ocean fishing harbour), Palanga (a famous sea resort agglomeration), and several recreational and industrial centres (Fig. 1). The northern part of the Kursiu nerija spit is a landscape preserve. The coastal zone is densely populated. During summer the population reaches about 0.5 million.
