Abstract
India, owing to its size and geographical location, is characterized by extremely varied agroclimatic conditions, ranging from humid to arid and tropical to temperate. The most important climatic element for agriculture in the tropics is the rainfall. The dependence of Indian agriculture on monsoon rainfall is well known; in fact, the Indian economy has been described as a gamble on the monsoon rains. Any climatic change involving a large-scale change in the rainfall is therefore expected to make a significant impact on agricultural productivity in India.
