Abstract

This paper deals with the outcome of an encounter between a binary star and a single star, and other types of encounter involving only small numbers of stars. It reviews the applications of this problem, mainly in stellar dynamics, and summarises the methods that can be used. It ends with a survey of the most important studies of this problem, and some requirements for further work.
