Abstract

We present an analytical method, based on Lie series canonical transformation, which allows the computation of the secular variations in the semimajor axes of an N-body system. As an example, we compute explicitly the amplitude of the main secular term in Uranus and Neptune semimajor axes, having a periodicity of 1.119.000 yr; the comparison with the results of numerical integrations yields satisfactory agreement.
