Abstract
Astragalus huangheensis Fu et Lin having origin in areas of old course of the Huanghe River (Yellow River), China is a kind of perennial legume with values of forage grass, green manure crop and water and soil conservation. This herb has characteristics of different stress resistances, high yield and high protein contents, and is a good germplasm for promoting agriculture and animal husbandry in the areas of drought and windy—sandy. But several agronomic characters, such as long growth period, low maturity of seeds etc, should be improved. Somatic variation may occur by protoplast culture and clones with good traits may be selected. These have been certificated by Larkin & Scowcroft (1981). The aim of this experiment is seeking for obtaining new cultivars with good traits through protoplast culture.
