Abstract
Assaultive behavior in psychiatric inpatients presents a major problem, Besides the obvious physical danger to the victims among patients and staff, it impairs the effectiveness of treatment programs, and has a negative impact on staff morale. The frequency of occurrence of assaultive behavior depands on its definition, method of reporting, patient characteristics, and many other factors (Tardiff, 1983). The best available estimate is that 8% of patients commit at least one aggressive act physically directed toward another person (an assault) over a period of three months (Tardiff & Sweillam, 1982).
