Pulmonary Resection in Sarcoma Metastases

Part of the book series: Developments in Oncology ((DION,volume 55))

Abstract

The first pulmonary resection of a metastatic sarcoma to lung performed at Memorial Hospital was in 1940. For the ensuing 25 years, surgery was offered only to select patients with 1 or 2 metastases and a long disease-free interval after treatment of their primary tumor. Our early experience in treating systematically pulmonary metastases began in 1965 and was limited to osteogenic sarcoma. The initial 22 patients with resected metastases that we reported in 1971 have now been followed for 20 years and 6 of these (27%) are still alive and well.
