Abstract

In Japan many kinds of CDs are produced and sold. Besides the pure products, known as alpha-,beta- and gamma-CD, mixtures of these forms and mixtures of CDs and linear dextrins or oligosaccharides are on the market. In terms of volume, these mixtures have a larger market share. In addition to these conventional cyclic CDs, a branched CD, maltosyl-CD, was brought on market in 1986. Total sales of CDs in 1987 is estimated at about 500 tons, but precise figures are not available. All CDs produced by methods other than solvent methods are legally approved as natural food additives in Japan. Alpha-CD and beta-CD are approved as materials and additives for pharmaceutical use. Beta-CD is recognized as an ingredient for cosmetics. In actual uses for foods, CDs are used for preparing powdered spices, flavors, tea, nuts, seeds, and vinegar. To reduce undesired components, CDs are applied to soybean products, seafood and meat. CDs are also used for improving the emulsifi-cation of whipping creams, mayonnaises and dressings. For cosmetics and toiletries, CDs are used for powdering squalene, herb extracts, olive oil, liposoluble vitamins. Breath deodorizer and liquid shampoo containing CDs are also on the market. As other uses of CDs, several resins containing inclusion compounds of CDs are produced. These are used to control the release of guests such as perfumes, flavors, insect repellent and fungicide.
