Abstract
With the increased use of cocaine in the United States, it has been recently recognized that increasing numbers of pregnancies are complicated by cocaine use. Information regarding the effects of cocaine on the devloping fetus and newborn infant is sparse, however, and thus far has focused on cocaine users as a group. There has been no information regarding the relationship of patterns of cocaine use in pregnancy and differential effects on outcome of pregnancy or the newborn infant. In the present chapter, pregnancies complicated by the abuse of cocaine are presented and compared to pregnancies in which no alcohol and/or drug use occurred. These cocaine-exposed pregnancies are then evaluated according to patterns of cocaine use in the pregnancy.
