Abstract

Desmal epithelia are a pseudotype because of their mesodermal origin. Their phylogeny and ontogeny permit the distinction of three types:

  1. (1)

Epithelia of serous cavities, the remnants of the coelom. These are the pleural, peritoneal and pericardial cavities, characteristic of the coelomate animals, including man.

  2. (2)

Endothelia of vessels: (a) blood vessels in the majority of animals with a closed or mixed circulatory system, including man; (b) lymph vessels, in animals from jawless vertebrates to mammals, including man.

  3. (3)

Desmal epithelia of synovial origin in vertebrates and possibly in some highly developed invertebrates with joints (22, 63).
