Increase of Potato Tuber Yields in Short Rotations of Potato by Seed Tuber Treatments with Fluorescent Pseudomonas spp.

  • Chapter
Effects of Crop Rotation on Potato Production in the Temperate Zones

Part of the book series: Developments in Plant and Soil Sciences ((DPSS,volume 40))

Abstract

Potato tuber yields in short rotations of potato can be increased by seed tuber treatments with selected fluorescent Pseudomonas spp. strains. The mechanism underlying these yield increases seems to be siderophore-mediated competition for ferric iron between the applied bacteria and deleterious rhizobacteria. Yield increases by fluorescent Pseudomonas spp. strains under field conditions are variable. Explanations for this variability and possibilities to improve the effects of the bacterial treatments are discussed.
