Abstract

In The Netherlands, the 10 most frequent cancers are responsible for an annual death of 24,000 patients. In men 4,535 out of 14,483 cancer-related deaths and in women 4,002 out of 9,526 are related to gastrointestinal cancer (Central Bureau of Statistics, The Netherlands 1985). Colorectal cancer is the prevailing gastrointestinal cancer: in men it ranks second to lung cancer, followed by prostate, stomach, pancreas, bladder and oesophageal malignancies. In women, colorectal carcinoma follows after breast cancer, with lung, stomach, ovary, pancreas, bladder, uterus and oesophagus in decreasing order.
