Abstract

There is an aspect of the practice of philosophy which involves describing some important and frequently used term by specification of necessary and sufficient conditions for the proper use of the term. Much of epistemology, for example, is engaged in articulating an accurate description of “knowledge”. And with an accurate description is the implication of accurate and inaccurate, or right and wrong uses of the word. This approach to understanding the concept takes on a normative tint by which some immutable, prescribed meaning of a term must be respected.
