Abstract

The white dwarf magnetic field is likely to prevent the formation of an accretion disc in short period cataclysmic variables. Accretion discs are not present in synchronous systems (“polars”) and could be absent in non-synchronous systems (“intermediate polars”) for orbital periods < 5hr. This result is a consequence of the hypothesis that white dwarf magnetic moments in polars and intermediate polars are μ ≈ 103-1034 Gcm3: this hypothesis is strongly supported by recent evolutionary considerations.
