Abstract
Guyana, formerly named British Guiana, is a culturally-pluralistic society with six distinct ethnic groups. With the exception of the Amerindians who live in the sparsely settled interior region, ninety percent of Guyana’s 900 000 people is concentrated on a narrow coastal zone which is less than five percent of the country’s land area. The population of the coastal zone or coastal belt reaches 400 per km2, whereas the country’s overall population density is only 4.7/km2.
