Abstract
Primary (autotrophic) production data for the lakes of southern Africa are very limited. The largest data bases exist for Lake Sibaya and Swartvlei (Fig. 4.2a), with a much smaller record for the Bot River estuary, a coastal lake east of Cape Town (Fig. 13.1). In order to compare the production data from these systems it is essential here to briefly look at their light regimes (a more general discussion of the light regime in lakes and reservoirs is provided in Chapter 10.2). These data are available only for Lake Sibaya and Swartvlei.
