Summary
ARALL is a modern fatigue resistant material built up from thin high strength aluminium alloy sheets and prepregs containing about 50% aramid fibres and 50% structural adhesive. The excellent fatigue properties of ARALL are caused by intact aramid fibres bridging cracks in the aluminium sheets, thus reducing crack opening and crack growth.
In some cases unexpected fibre fracture was observed in ARALL®2 laminates, causing a reduction of the favourable crack bridging effect. The fatigue properties of ARALL2 are still superior to those of monolithic aluminium sheets. However, the potential of the material cannot completely be utilized. The present report describes some mechanical aspects promoting fibre failure and it is explained why unexpected fibre failure does not occur in other ARALL laminates.
