Abstract

The understanding of flow through porous media represents an interesting challenge in many situations of practical interest. It is common to differentiate between single-phase and two-phase (or multi-phase) flow processes. Examples of the latter are the immiscible displacement of oil by water during oil recovery by water-flooding, infiltration of water in soils (where the two fluids are usually water and air), mercury porosimetry, trickle bed reactors, packed distillation columns, etc. Single-phase flow problems are important in chemical reactor design, in some polymer engineering processes, in the determination of dispersion coefficients, in miscible displacement of oil by CO2 or chemical flooding, etc.
